Land Boarding Experience Days: This land yachting (land sailing/sand yachting) experience is
the perfect introduction to an extreme sport that has origins
stretching back to ancient Egyptian times. And once you've given it
a go, you'll understand just why it's lasted as long as it has.
Land yachting is the perfect fusion of sailing and motor racing,
combining the exhilarating feeling of wind-powered acceleration
with the familiar buzz of travelling at high speeds. Sitting just a
few inches off the ground, you will hurtle along the beach at
speeds of up to 40mph in full control of your land yacht, safe in
the knowledge that the superb instruction you have received means
that no brakes = no problem!
Land yachting in Scotland is not only an ideal group activity -
popular for stag parties, hen parties, and company events - but it
is also flexible in location, with the possibility of choosing a
number of locations to suit your group.Once you have arrived and
been welcomed to the centre your day begins with a thorough safety
briefing, introduction to the land yacht, and an overview of the
techniques you will learn during the experience. Once you're all
kitted out with your safety gear, you'll get into the yachts and
sail at a low speed while you learn your most important lesson of
the day - how to stop a craft that has no brakes!
After this you will get to grips with steering your land yacht,
mastering a manoeuvre known as a luff turn. Once your instructor is
happy that you can complete safe and controlled turns, you will
start to sail around a figure-of-eight circuit where your new
skills are put to the test, and you have the opportunity to pick up
some speed.
As you improve, your instructor can extend the length of the
circuit, allowing for faster, longer stretches of sailing. If you
are a natural land sailor, and your instructor feels you are ready,
you may even have time to learn the more complicated gybe turn!
